Supporting Community and
Economic Development
NRG Global Giving identifies non-profit organizations and supports programs
and initiatives that focus on community and economic development—including
schools, community infrastructure and public resources. Explore the ways we’re
helping groups like Isles, Inc., PACE, the Federation of Food Banks of New Jersey and HomeFront.
Fostering Self-Reliance
For more than 25 years, Isles, Inc. has helped families in and around Trenton, NJ, near our Princeton headquarters. Isles uses comprehensive social development strategies to provide job training, affordable housing, education, financial literacy and other services to people in need. Its mission is to empower individuals and create self-sustaining families.
Because this remarkable organization helps more than 10,000 people every year with such impressive results, NRG pledged funds to renovate and expand the YouthBuild Institute—Isles’ alternative high school and vocational training facility for at-risk young adults.
Helping Teens Get Back on Track
NRG Texas supports PACE (Proper Self-Esteem, Academics, Character, Employment), an organization that structures a 14- to 17-week curriculum for at-risk youth. Targeted to kids in detention and on parole, PACE has proven itself to be quite a force. Since PACE was founded, 154 at-risk youth have enrolled and 115 have completed the program.
The recidivism rate among PACE youths is nearly 20 percent lower than among non-PACE youths, according to the Texas Youth Commission. PACE plans to construct an empowerment center to equip youths and families to become productive citizens. To date, PACE has saved Texas taxpayers more than $5.1 million by keeping kids out of state facilities.
Breaking the Cycle of Poverty and Homelessness
NRG has teamed up with HomeFront, a nationally recognized organization that, for 17 years, has fought and succeeded in helping end the cycle of poverty among the homeless in Mercer County, NJ. NRG provided a grant to build and sustain HomeFront’s summer camp program, which creates a safe environment for children when school is out.
The skilled staff at HomeFront is utilizing innovative child development techniques to accommodate the complex needs of children who endure the instability of homelessness in their young lives.
Fueling the Fight Against Hunger
We partnered with the Federation of Food Banks of New Jersey—part of America’s Second Harvest Network—to sponsor the annual Check-Out Hunger® Campaign, the Federation’s largest annual fundraiser. Supported by major grocery retailers and convenience stores throughout the state, the program helps shoppers easily add a donation to a grocery purchase.
NRG’s annual sponsorship fully underwrites the costs of this program so that every dollar raised goes directly to statewide food banks and their agencies. In NRG’s second year of sponsorship, Check-Out Hunger® broke the $1 million mark for the first time ever.
