Clean Energy Generation+++

NRG Energy -- a leader in clean energy generation and sales -- is adding to a portfolio of emission-free nuclear, wind and solar generation with an industry leading carbon dioxide capture system that will use the carbon from existing coal plants to revitalize production at mature oil fields in Texas and Louisiana through proven Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes.

Through its wholly owned subsidiary, Petra Nova, the first project will be built at the WA Parish plant southwest of Houston, Texas.

The Department of Energy is investing up to $167 million in this post-combustion carbon capture demonstration unit under the Clean Coal Power Initiative Program (CCPI). This cost-sharing collaboration between the federal government and private industry is designed to demonstrate low-emission carbon capture technologies in advanced coal-based power generation. The goal of CCPI is to accelerate the readiness of advanced coal technologies for commercial deployment, ensuring that the United States has clean, reliable, and affordable electricity and power.

By using EOR, carbon dioxide is not a waste product but a critical tool in increasing domestic energy production and helping to reduce the billion dollars America sends overseas every day for imported oil.
