Diverse portfolio

NRG Energy has one of the industry's most diverse generation portfolios in terms of geography, fuel type and dispatch levels. This diversity helps NRG balance risk and maximize returns to enhance stakeholder value.

Geographic diversity: We have generation assets located throughout North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific and Latin America.

Fuel type diversity: Our projects use such diverse fuel sources as fossil fuels (natural gas, oil, coal and coal seam methane), green power renewable fuels (biomass, landfill gas, hydro and geo-thermal energy) and refuse-derived fuels.

Dispatch diversity: We can profitably sell power when we need it by having a portfolio diverse in terms of dispatch type. We have a variety of baseload, intermediate and peaking units to create a balanced portfolio. Baseload units run most often and provide power to meet day-to-day needs. Intermediate and peaking units are dispatched during periods of higher demand.

Power marketing and trading

NRG's power marketing group enhances the value of our portfolio through fuel buying and trading, and working with plant operators to dispatch the right plant at the right time.

Operational excellence

Operational excellence is key to NRG's value equation. Our operations teams at the plants coordinate closely with power marketing to ensure that plants are ready when called upon. We use a technique in North America called In-Market Available (IMA) of weighing availability of an asset based on the value of energy in the market hour-by-hour.
