NRG's Proposed Tonawanda Energy Park
On September 1, 2006, the New York Power Authority (NYPA), as part of New York State's advanced clean coal initiative, requested proposals for up to 600 MW of generation powered by clean coal technology.
On October 31, 2006, NRG responded with an innovative proposal utilizing the cleanest coal-fueled technology available—Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC)—at its existing Huntley generation site in Tonawanda, NY. This project will reduce nitrogen oxides (NOx), sulfur dioxide (SO2) and mercury (Hg) emissions at the site while offering the capability of capturing up to 65% of all carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from the plant. In addition to being environmentally superior, the plant will consume abundant and domestically-produced coal, providing New York State with fuel diversity and more stable prices.

To build on the competitive advantages of locating in Tonawanda, NY, NRG is announcing its creation of the Tonawanda Energy Park (TEP). In addition to the previously proposed Huntley IGCC Project, the TEP will include a state-of-the-art ethanol production facility. The TEP will produce up to 100 million gallons per year of ethanol while reducing greenhouse gas emissions from mobile sources.
Increased local investment
In addition to over $1 billion of investment in the IGCC project, the new ethanol plant will create another $200 million in direct local investment. |
Increased jobs
With the 40 permanent jobs added from the proposed ethanol facility, a total of 140 permanent jobs will be added by the TEP. A total of at least 1,300 construction jobs will be created for the entire TEP project. |
Superior environmental benefits
The IGCC plant will be the cleanest coal plant in New York State. Coupled with the ethanol plant, which will decrease emissions of CO2, the TEP facility will have a meaningful and long-term impact on greenhouse gas emissions in New York State. |
Economic development
The TEP will attract another industry—ethanol—to Tonawanda and Erie County, which will have a lasting impact on the local economy. |
