NRG Energy is working diligently to bring more environmentally friendly and reliable sources of energy to the state of New York. With projects underway at Huntley Station and Dunkirk in upstate New York and the Astoria Gas Turbines in the borough of Queens, NRG is focused on enhancements that will provide New York residents with energy that provides price stability and is respectful to the environment.

Huntley Station, the oldest and continuously operating coal-fueled generation station in the United States, is poised to become home to one of the industry’s newest and most advanced “clean coal” technologies — Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC). This innovative new technology will enable the plant to better utilize domestically produced coal — the country’s most abundant and affordable fuel source. Once implemented, IGCC will ensure energy price stability and provide dramatic reductions in environmental emissions.

Further south, in Astoria, Queens, NRG is hoping to add 500 megawatts (MW) of generation by 2011, which would nearly double its current power output.
