As part of our environmental stewardship, NRG is committed to finding new energy solutions that can meet growing power needs while reducing emissions. Pending necessary government and regulatory approvals, NRG will design and implement a Plasma Gasification Technology project at our Somerset Generating Station. This next-generation solution uses a process that gasifies solid feedstocks such as coal, biomass, and municipal solid waste to create synthetic gas (or "syngas” for short). Once purified, the synthetic gas may be used to generate clean electric power. Construction could begin by year-end, with an expected operational date of mid-2009.
