NRG’s Repowering efforts in Louisiana are focused on its Big Cajun I and Big Cajun II power plants, which have been in operation since 1972. At Big Cajun I, the plan is to replace two gas-fueled boilers with one new Circulating Fluidized Bed unit, which will produce approximately the same amount of electricity (200,000 homes) while providing the flexibility to burn petroleum coke, coal, and renewable biomass.
At Big Cajun II, a coal facility, the plan is to add a fourth generating unit, which would bring 705 megawatts (MW) of low-cost, stable, electric generating capacity to the region, enough to power 705,000 homes. This enhancement will utilize the best available emission control technologies to comply with all environmental standards to reduce air emissions and control pollution. |
