High energy demand—particularly during the hottest days of the year—can result in intense power grid overloads that create significant disruptions to homes, businesses and vital services. Cos Cob, a peaking plant, is on standby to provide emergency reserve power when needed, such as during an outage or period of unusually high demand.

Cos Cob also has environmental benefits. In June 2008, the plant’s energy output increased from 60 to 100 megawatts—enough to power approximately 800,000 homes—and its sulfur emissions decreased by 97%.

In addition to Cos Cob, NRG continues to explore other ways to help Connecticut enhance its energy infrastructure.
